Dyslexia

A Diagnostic Assessment for Dyslexia is a series of short tasks to assess the individual’s level of general ability, working memory and speed of processing as well as specific areas of literacy, such as phonological knowledge and awareness, reading fluency, spelling knowledge and speed of writing. A typing task is also administered for older learners and a short maths task can be given. Background information is sought from parents/carers and, with your permission, from the school and an eye test must have occurred within the last 12 months.

The Report will identify areas of strength as well as areas of difficulty and provide detailed recommendations for home and school.

Dyscalculia

A Diagnostic Assessment for Dyscalculia is a series of short tasks to assess the individual’s level of general ability, working memory, speed of processing and phonological knowledge as well as several timed and untimed maths tasks, to assess mathematical knowledge and procedure. Background information is sought from parents/carers and, with your permission, from the school and an eye test must have occurred within the last 12 months.

The Report will identify areas of strength as well as specific areas of general and mathematical difficulty and will provide detailed recommendations for home and school.

Core Learning Skills Assessment

This is not a diagnostic assessment, but rather a summary of the individual’s general underlying visual and verbal abilities, speed of processing, and working and phonological memory. Difficulties with any of these processes may cause the learner to struggle with literacy and/or numeracy tasks.

Background information will be sought from parents/carers and, with your permission, from the school and an eye test must have occurred within the last 12 months. This assessment will take between one and a half and two hours, including breaks.

A report will be produced within two weeks which will highlight strengths and areas of difficulty and provide recommendations for both home and school. If, as a result of this report, a diagnostic assessment for either dyslexia or dyscalculia is undertaken, £100 will be deducted from the cost of the second assessment, as some of the assessed tasks will have already been administered. However, the second assessment must take place within three months of the first.

A covering letter, outlining the key points of the report, can be provided for the SEN Co-ordinator if requested, at no extra cost.

Assessment Process

  1. A brief telephone conversation is advised before booking an assessment and this can be arranged by contacting us via email at eastdorsetdd@gmail.com

  2. If you decide to go ahead with an assessment, we will agree a date, far enough in advance to ensure that information will have been received from the school and an eye examination has taken place if needed. You will receive a questionnaire to complete and return. At this point the initial payment will need to be paid.

  3. On the day of the assessment, the learner will need to be accompanied by an adult and will bring any learning aids they routinely use, for example, their glasses and any tinted overlays, special pencils or pens etc. They should bring a pen and/or pencil with them. Although we build in breaks, the learner will need to concentrate for a significant time, so they should be well rested, sufficiently fed and in comfortable clothing.

  4. Following the assessment, the background information, assessment results and observations from the day, will be used to produce a formal diagnostic report. The report is lengthy but will normally be ready within two weeks of the assessment. On receipt of the balance of the cost, the report will be released to you by email. It is important to read the report and to let us know if there are any incorrect personal details. If you have requested a covering letter, this will accompany the report.

  5. Once you have read the report you may have questions. A face-to-face or virtual feedback session will be offered. If you want to book any coaching or learner one-to-one sessions, these can be arranged.
