Our Other Services
Beyond assessments and tutoring, we offer a range of additional services to support literacy and numeracy
Tutoring
Occasionally, following an assessment, specialist input is advised and this can be arranged. Sessions last for about one hour and usually take place at the weekend. Occasionally, sessions can be arranged to take place at the learner’s school.
However, as literacy or numeracy difficulties are likely to persist, a coaching model for the adults who can support the learner is preferred.
GCSE English Language
Some students with dyslexia struggle during their GCSE years. There is much to learn and a considerable amount of material to remember. The English Language course can be quite a challenge, whilst a grade 4 or 5 may be needed for progression to the sixth form or college. We offer one-to-one sessions with students currently working at grade 3 seeking to achieve a grade 4 and students currently achieving a grade 4 who want to gain a pass at grade 5. The sessions last approximately 60 minutes and usually take place after school or at the weekend.
Those attending these sessions will be invited to a small group ‘Effective Revision’ session, free of charge.
Adult Coaching Sessions
Following an assessment, one-to-one coaching sessions focus on the learner’s difficulties and the recommendations cited in the report. Technique as well as resources are discussed and modelled so that the adult gains knowledge and confidence in an area of learning.
More general sessions are also offered on a one-to-one or small group basis which will focus on one of the following:
Phonics – Understanding sound letter correspondence and how this is used to teach reading. How you can help your child on their reading journey.
Spelling – The link between spelling, phonics, reading and writing and an exploration of the ways children and young people can improve their spelling.
Reading – Some learners find reading fluency difficult, and this can lead to a reluctance to read. Strategies and resources are explored to encourage and improve reading.
Writing – Developing efficient handwriting takes time but is still important in the digital age. Correct pen hold and accurate modelling of handwriting is crucial and there are several resources and aids which can help.
Maths – Many learners having trouble with maths have processing and working memory issues. Using concrete manipulatives, that is actual objects which can be held and manipulated, can be of great help. It is also important to ensure that the building blocks of maths learning are in place. This session will explore the many resources available to support a learner gain understanding and confidence in maths.
Memory – Some learners need help to retrieve information for use and a poor working memory can have a negative effect on many areas of home and school life. This session will explore strategies to support the memory for learning.
