East Dorset Dyslexia and Dyscalculia

Our service supports children and young people with literacy and/or numeracy difficulties through assessment and bespoke intervention.

We offer coaching to parents and educators to enable effective learner support to improve the learner’s experience. Coaching enables parents to be part of the solution, gaining knowledge and understanding of current teaching and learning strategies.

Some learners progress more slowly than others, some struggle with particular aspects of their schoolwork, whilst others seem to make slow progress, however hard they try. Including the learner in the decisions and review of new ways of learning, enables the child or young person to retain a sense of control over their learning and progress.

As children get older, they become increasingly aware that they struggle to keep up with their peers and can become disheartened. A diagnosis helps the learner to recognise their areas of strength and difficulty. Active engagement with strategies for more effective learning helps them to maintain high self-esteem, crucial for personal wellbeing and development.

Recognising that children progress at different speeds, where difficulties become apparent, early intervention is crucial, so that effective support can be put in place. Bespoke recommendations target key areas of learning and provide the opportunity for regular feedback and discussion between home and school, keeping you involved in your child's learning journey.

A partnership between home and school is key, so that parental support accompanies what is done in school.
